The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models

The August 2021 model update will see the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models benefiting from a host of new product features. With an even sharper performance profile, enhanced handling and a distinctly more dynamic presence, the high-performance diesel models further consolidate their best-in-segment position. The 3.0-litre straight-six engine with quad-turbo charging now delivers 290 kW (394 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft), offering superior power at all times with an increase of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) on its predecessor.

The resulting performance figures are impressive, catapulting the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 267 km/h / 166 mph (BMW ALPINA XD3) or 268 km/h / 167 mph (BMW ALPINA XD4). The revised variable sports steering ensures even sharper and more responsive handling. The updated Performance Control markedly improves dynamic cornering. The striking new BMW light design and the redesigned ALPINA aerodynamic components at the front and rear make for a much more contemporary, powerful appearance. The BMW Parking Assistant as well as the electrically folding exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle are now included as standard.

ALPINA XD3 and XD4 accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 are aimed at drivers looking to combine a superior driving experience and comfort with the ability to cover long distances at ease. They embody a one-of-a-kind driving experience shaped by the exceptional driving dynamics and high torque, backed up by the reliability and efficiency diesels are known for.

As part of the model update, the power potential of the 3.0 litre straight-six diesel engine with quad-turbo charging has been boosted even further. The engine management parameters have been optimised, allowing the drivetrain to now deliver a power output of 290 kW (394 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). The engine’s full power potential is available between 1750 rpm and 3000 rpm. This translates into outstanding power even in everyday driving situations, at low engine speeds.

The revised Launch Control function automatically controls the power and torque output, the traction control and the transmission to allow optimum acceleration manoeuvres from standstill. The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The maximum speed is 267 km/h / 166 mph (BMW ALPINA XD3) or 268 km/h / 167 mph (BMW ALPINA XD4). No other models in this segment come close to this driving performance.

Despite this diesel engine’s high power output, it is highly efficient

Power is transmitted by a ZF 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission, 8HP75 generation, specifically adapted to the high-torque drivetrain. Manual gear changes are performed using the classic ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC shift buttons or optional ALPINA aluminium shift paddles. Despite this diesel engine’s high power output, it is highly efficient – low fuel consumption means long driving ranges. Fuel consumption measured according to the new and more realistic WLTP measuring cycle (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) is 8.5 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 223 g/km. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, a SCR catalytic converter with aqueous urea solution injection (AdBlue®) reduces the amount of nitrogen oxides in the emissions. The AdBlue® tank volume is 20 litres, which typically equates to a range of at approximately 10.000 km.

The ALPINA sport suspension

In keeping with the high-performance engine, the ALPINA sport suspension offers excellent longitudinal and lateral dynamics – without sacrificing any driving comfort. The adaptive dampers with ALPINA specific calibration offer a wide range of driving experiences in the different driving modes ranging from COMFORT+ to SPORT+. Stiffer and shorter springs provide a lower centre of gravity and optimised aerodynamics.

The model update includes a revised steering calibration: the steering is now more sensitive and precise, and offers an intuitive response in every driving.

For the wheel and tyre combination, ALPINA’s chassis and suspension engineers rely on the trademark ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ alloy wheels with lockable hub covers and hidden air valves. These are fitted with specially developed Pirelli P Zero Ultra-High Performance tyres, which are tailored to the vehicle by Pirelli and ALPINA engineers as part of a complex development and testing process. The tyre dimensions are 255/45 ZR20 at the front and 285/40 ZR20 at the rear (EU tyre label: C / A / B, 71 dB front, C / A / A, 71 dB rear). The optional ALPINA CLASSIC 22“ forged wheels are likewise available with specially developed tyres in the dimensions 255/35 ZR22 front and 295/30 ZR22 rear (EU tyre label: D / B / B, 71 dB front, D / B / A, 72 dB rear).

The ALPINA brake system now features improved, higher performing brake pads. Customers can also choose the optional high-performance brake system with lightweight drilled composite discs measuring Ø 395 mm (15.6“) at the front and Ø 398 mm (15.7“) at the rear which provides a more direct pedal feedback and outstanding fading stability.

BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models now come with Performance Control

The intelligent all-wheel drive system is based on the BMW xDrive system. The ALPINA specific calibration results – depending on the driving situation – in a pronounced rear-wheel biased torque distribution, for dynamic, agile handling. As well as the standard rear limited slip differential, the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models now come with Performance Control. This electronic control system prevents understeering through selective brake interventions at each individual wheel. In doing so, agility and lateral grip is increased and the full dynamic capabilities of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 is maximised during cornering.

ALPINA’s in-house saddlery provides an almost unlimited range of interior features

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 have a commanding presence, even when stationary. The new light and kidney grille design and the re-engineered ALPINA aerodynamic components at the front and rear, which elegantly capture the shape and lines of the chassis, lend the models a distinctly more contemporary and sportive design language. The new rear diffusor, which can also integrate the optional tow hook, underlines the athletic character of the two models.

The BMW Parking Assistant as well as the interior and electrically folding exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle have been added to the extensive list of standard equipment. The redesigned BMW centre console finished in high gloss offers intuitive control options. Alongside power and torque, the new BMW sport displays can now also show boost pressure, oil temperature and the G-forces in a dynamic diagram.

ALPINA’s in-house saddlery provides an almost unlimited range of interior features for the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4: piping, stitching, embroidery, punching and embossing, made to customer specifications, add a personal touch to each BMW ALPINA automobile. The untreated LAVALINA leather upholstery, painstakingly crafted in the ALPINA saddlery, adds the most exquisite natural material used in the automotive industry to the options list.

ALPINA – MANUFACTURER OF EXCLUSIVE AUTOMOBILES

Burkard Bovensiepen founded the automobile manufactory ALPINA in 1965. Ever since, Buchloe has been home to probably the world’s most renowned automobiles based on BMW models, developed and produced by the independent family-owned business in cooperation with BMW. This close partnership forms the basis for the continued success of the ALPINA brand: individual automobiles are manufactured with great love for detail and technical finesse, which, however, at the same time meet the high quality and safety standards of series production. Since 1983, ALPINA is officially registered as an automobile manufacturer by the German Ministry of Transport, the Kraftfahrtbundesamt.

Elegant understatement is at the very core of ALPINA’s brand philosophy, which is manifested in an interior with the focus on comfort, above-average driving performance and a discreetly sporty exterior. BMW ALPINA automobiles have regularly caused sensations, both on the road and the race track – the result of a remarkable model history. Founder Burkard Bovensiepen runs the company together with his sons Andreas and Florian.
